Are you tackling tenancy fraud and short-term lets using Airbnb?

Hannah Turner has been an Accredited Financial Investigator (FI) for 13 years and joined the Shared Anti-Fraud Service in November 2018 as their first Financial Investigator. She started her FI career with Hertfordshire Police within the Eastern Special Operations Unit (ERSOU).  Hannah has dealt with a large variety of investigations, including some which were very complex and high-profile. The cases have ranged from large-scale drugs to direct payments. She has civil and criminal powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, which she has been able to implement effectively to return funds from subjects back to the Council.

Chloe Tomkins has been dedicated to combating fraud as a Counter Fraud Officer with the Shared Anti-Fraud Service (SAFS) for the past two years. Currently, she is a member of the Complex Team, where she primarily handles cases related to Adult Care Services and dual working. Before joining SAFS, she served as a Response Officer with Hertfordshire Police. This role provided her with invaluable experience in law enforcement and a solid foundation for her current work in fraud prevention.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Chloe is pursuing a Level 4 Counter Fraud Investigator apprenticeship, which includes earning an Accredited Counter Fraud Specialist qualification.

Hannah and Chloe will be joining us to share invaluable experience of their investigation into a short-term let tenancy fraud. This is a growing concern that costs the taxpayer £1.8 billion a year due to the misuse of social housing. The rise of online marketplaces such as Airbnb and Booking.com has created opportunities for people to make money by subletting their properties. However, this has also led to an increased risk of short-let tenancy fraud, as some individuals are using social housing to make money illegally. By tuning in to Hannah and Chloe’s session, you can learn first-hand how they carried out this successful investigation, allowing you take away practical skills you can apply and share within your own organisations.
